‘Mirror Images’ is a series made up of 6 incense objects. It’s an exploration into material finishes, as well as a tool designed to prompt the viewer to question their meaning of home. Inspired by a quote from the late Gaetano Pesce when asking Ruth Shuman about the style of her home, Pesce stated, “Why doesn’t this home look like you?”. This was a statement that really stuck with me. ‘Home’ is our base, it’s a refuge, a place to create memories, build families, cry, laugh and so much more. Why live in something that doesn’t reflect you as a person? Playing with contrasting material finishes I have tried to convey the ‘norm’ by creating a bland, flat and common finish and the ‘unique’ by polishing each metal to a mirror finish. The mirror represents the reflection of the viewer’s personality and style and the unpolished surfaces are those who follow trends for the sake of fitting in.
